Holidays, Weather and Emergencies Guidelines

Closings Due to Holidays

The Library will be closed on all County holidays. This traditionally includes the Friday that immediately follows Thanksgiving.

The Library will be closed on Easter Sunday on order of the Library Director.

When Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are not official County holidays as declared ahead of time for the calendar year, the Library will close within two hours of the designated time should the County Manager order an unplanned County holiday closure.

Cancellation of Children’s Events Due to Bad Weather

For safety, Library children’s programs are canceled when Arlington Public Schools are closed for inclement weather.

Closings Due to Bad Weather and Other Emergencies

Decisions not to open because of weather or other issues, delayed openings and early closures during the workweek are declared by the County Manager as part of County operations during morning and afternoon hours. Such decisions are made by the Library Director during evenings and weekends, consulting with the Department of Parks and Recreation for weather situations.

In the event of a weather-delayed County opening during the workweek, libraries scheduled to open in the morning will open two hours later than regularly scheduled if the County is on a traditional two-hour delay. Branches scheduled to open in the afternoon would not be affected by a delay as safety and maintenance issues should have been resolved during the morning.

Decisions not to open Library locations for the day, delayed openings and early closings are publicized through the Library website and social media. Decisions affecting Countywide operations including the Library are publicized through local news media and County web and social media vehicles.
