Join the Friends on Saturday, Nov. 3 for Arlington Puzzle Festival 2012 – a celebration of words, logic, numbers and thinking and a place to meet other puzzle fanatics in a friendly, fun and enjoyable atmosphere.
Crossword puzzles will be provided by New York Times puzzlemaster Will Shortz. Sudoku puzzles will be provided by U.S. and world champion Thomas Snyder.
Registration available at the door on first come, first served basis

- 8:30 a.m. – Registration Opens
- 8:45 a.m – Kick-off
- 9:00 a.m. – First Speaker
- 9:30 a.m. – Second Speaker
- 10:00 a.m. – Crossword Tournament Begins (Crossword tournament runs through lunch, until 1:30 p.m.)
- 11:45 a.m. – Lunch Delivered (participants will have the option of ordering lunch before the tournament)
- 12:00 p.m. – Third Speaker
- 12:45 p.m. – Crossword Finals
- 1:30 p.m. – Sudoku Tournament Begins (Sudoku tournament runs from 1:30pm to 4:00pm)
- 3:00 p.m. – OCTO Competition/Scavenger Hunt ends
- 3:30 p.m. – Sudoku Finals
- 4:00 p.m. – Awards/Closing
Prizes will be awarded to winning competitors.
*Participation will be free for current members of the Friends of the Arlington Public Library, with a suggested donation for non-members. All proceeds will go to help support library outreach activities and advancement of the Library’s collection.

Arlington Puzzle Festival Contributors
Matt Gaffney, widely published professional crossword puzzle writer, will speak about constructing and solving crossword puzzles. Gaffney’s books include Gridlock: Crossword Puzzles and the Mad Geniuses Who Create Them and The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Crossword Puzzles and Word Games.
Andy Wenzel is the curator of the Tropic/Herald/Post Hunt Archives (www.tropichunt.com), the puzzle hunts created by Dave Barry, Tom Shroder and Gene Weingarten and run by the Miami Herald and Washington Post. He is an avid Hunt fan, having participated and documented each Hunt since the first one in 1984, collecting over 1400 Hunt-related media items and has appeared on several Hunt maps. Andy will aggressively challenge anyone who attempts to beat his consecutive Hunt losing streak.
Doug Gardner is a very part-time puzzle inventor who works as computer security specialist for the Department of Defense. Starting in 2008, he invented and patented a new kind of math and logic puzzle called the OCTO. More recently he has developed apps for the Apple products, including an OCTO app for the iPad.
