In Person: Beth Macy on “Factory Man: How One Furniture Maker Battled Offshoring, Stayed Local — and Helped Save an American Town” macy

Macy has written the remarkable story of John Bassett III, a south Virginia furniture executive whose original company fell on hard times in the 1980s fighting relentless competition from Asia. Using legal strategies, streamlined technologies and the grit of Henry County persistence, Bassett puts his business and hometown back on firm footing and shows the way for a new made-in-America approach. “Factory Man” is winner of the 2013 J.Anthony Lucas Works-in-Progress Award.

Janet Maslin in the New York Times calls “Factory Man” a “deeply patriotic David vs. Goliath book. They give out awards for this kind of thing.”

Beth Macy is a reporter for the Roanoke Times.
