Expert Garden Talks for 2014

Talks take place at 7 p.m. outdoors at the Central Library Community Garden near the tennis courts unless otherwise indicated.

Season Finale, Oct. 15: 

  • Intro to the new tool lending library 
  • Urban agriculture initiatives in Arlington County.
  • A panel of gardening experts will be discuss the season and answer questions

  • April 2: No program
  • April 9: “Starting the Spring Garden: Transplanting, direct planting and readiness” — giveaways: seeds; seedlings
  • April 16: “Composting and Soil Testing”
  • April 23: ”Container gardens (all kinds)” — giveaways:  seeds
  • April 30: “Water, irrigation, rain barrels”
  • May 7: “Garden structures & vertical gardening” — giveaways: seeds, seedlings
  • May 14: “Herbs and herb container gardens” — giveaways: nibbles
  • May 21:  “No Room? No Problem-Growing Food in Small Spaces” — giveaways: seeds
  • May 28 (indoors): “Edible landscaping (including perennial vegetables)”
  • June 4: “Insect pests and beneficials” with lady bug release
  • June 11: “Weeds, mulches, tillage” with weed show and tell
  • June 18: “Pollination, pollinators, perennials”
  • June 25: “Top Ten vegetable plant diseases” with disease show and tell
  • July 2: No program
  • July 9: “Gardening with and for kids — giveaways: herbs, sachets
  • July 16: “Foraging the Wild Edibles”
  • July 23 (indoors) : “How vegetables are used around the world” — giveaways: food tastes, recipes
  • July 30: “Therapeutic Gardening”
  • Aug. 6: ”Vegetables for the fall” — giveaways: seeds
  • Aug. 13 (indoors):  Film in Auditorium–”A Place at the Table,” a documentary about hunger in the United States
  • Aug. 20 (indoors): ”Food preservation: canning, drying, freezing
  • Sept. 10: “Cover crops and crop rotations”
  • Sept. 17: “Extending the season: cold frames, row covers, etc.”
  • Sept. 24: “Compost and compost tea” (TENTATIVE)
  • Oct. 1 (indoors): “Indoors vegetable gardening for the winter”
  • Oct. 8: No program
  • Oct. 15 (indoors): “Season in review: what worked, what didn’t”
