Hear Dr. Lawrence Kaplan, army historian and editor of “John C. Tidball, The Artillery Service in the War of the Rebellion.”

Dr. Kaplan’s talk will highlight the role the U.S. Army’s field artillery played in the principal battles of the Civil War.

He also will discuss Tidball’s findings that the improper employment of field artillery, tying batteries down to relatively small infantry commands, diluted its firepower and seriously undermined the army’s effectiveness until reforms produced independent artillery commands that could properly mass fire in battle.
