—————————————————————————
The Arlington Public Library and Arlington Public Schools catalog and accounts system is down and we have lost data.
This system crash affects all activities that occurred from Saturday, Nov. 10 through Thursday, Nov. 15.
All online services from the Web and inside the Library are suspended. We are doing everything we can to restore the system. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
Arlington Public Library is operating on a regular schedule and you are welcome–in person–to browse the shelves and check out materials including holds. WiFi and public PCs are also available.
Privacy has not been compromised with this crash and patrons do not have to take any action at this time. We will provide updates on the Library website, Twitter and Facebook and will send a follow-up email once we have more details for you.
Thank you for your understanding and for supporting Arlington Public Library.

how do i check if my book is due? will it befined if it is due and i cannot find out.
While the system is down, no circulation activities can take place so you do not need to do anything regarding your account and materials checked out. Fines will not accrue. Hold on to materials until the system is back. Thanks.
My card number is 2020xxxxxxxx. I want renew my book on the computer, but I can’t.
Please help.
Thanks.
While the system is down, there is no way to renew. Fines will not accrue. Hold on to materials until the system is back. Thanks.
This is troubling, since I received an overdue notice today for books my husband returned on Thursday.
Christina,
We apologize for the trouble and concern caused to you (and many others) who may have received automated overdue notices on items returned during the period of lost data.
Fines will not accrue on items returned during the system outage.
While won’t be able to resolve the returns on your account until after the system is back up, we can assure you that we will do so as soon as possible.
There seem to have been plenty of overdue notices for books that have been returned…evidently the overdue notice system didn’t crash with the rest of the database. Wonder if this all is an aftereffect from Superstorm Sandy…my bank’s network was down for a week or so after the storm…then it came back on but the Library system went down!
I also recieved an over due notice, but I have returned the books before their due date.
Evelyn,
Fines will not accrue on items returned during the system outage.
I renewed the book I have several days ago and am now getting a notice that it is overdue!
You will not be charged – Accounts will be rectified once our system is fully operational.
I also received an overdue notice for a book I returned on Nov 11th. Good to know fees will not accrue.
I have received overdue notices for a DVD I have returned. Will this be rectified once the system is back up?
Yes – we apologize for the added confusion.
November 17. I also received an overdue email on a book I returned in the Central Box inside the Library on the 13th around 6pm. The book was “The Absent One”. I hope I am not going to be charged overdue fees, since I returned it on time.
Deborah,
You will not be charged – Accounts will be rectified once our system is fully operational.
I got an overdue notice for a book (Suburban warriors) that I returned to the bookdrop at your Plaza Branch Library on Saturday, Nov 10. I assume I’m getting this notice because your library database crashed and that it’s in error.
Thanks and hope you’re able to get your system operational soon.
Best,
Susan Landfield
You are correct – thanks for your understanding!
Hi – I renewed books online this week and am now being told that they’re overdue. I’m hoping that your statement that overdue fees won’t accrue will address this situation and allow me to keep these books for the renewal period without fees accruing.
Thanks!
Sue,
You are correct, no overdue fines will accrue during this time – your renewals will be in effect once the system is back up.
Can I still checkout books?
Vida,
Yes, Library items can still be checked out.
Is there internet access available on the computers?
Craig,
Yes – internet has not been affected, although self-service reservations are down, so staff will have to sign you up to use a computer.
What about those of us already away for Thanksgiving? Will all due dates automatically be reset to next Monday, following everyone’s Thanksgiving travels? Thanks!
What happens if you have books on hold? Usually if you don’t pick them up by a certain date they get released. Since I can’t access my account I don’t know if I have hold pickups pending. Have holds been frozen as well?
Lee,
All holds are currently frozen, and when the system does come back up, anything that was on hold as of last Thursday should still be on hold.
If you do find unexpected problems with your account or holds, we will also provide a place to report those problems.
What happens to holds I placed between November 10 and 15?
Mark,
We’re still trying to determine the status of holds placed Nov. 11 – 15, so we’ll let you know as soon as possible.
I can’t wait for the system to come back up. My kindle is empty and so is my soul
I , too , wonder about my holds. I have ( had) several and I cannot remember all. Will they still be there ?
