John Ball (1714-1766?), a yeoman farmer who received a land grant from Lord Fairfax, built this house around 1750. It is today the oldest surviving house in Arlington. The Carlin family who owned the house throughout most of the 19th century also built a resort recreation area near Four Mile Run. (National Register of Historic Places)
(5713 Fourth Street, S.)

Built in 1892 by the Carlin Springs Cooperative Association, Carlin Hall is Arlington's first community building. Over the years it has served as a meeting place, school and library. In 1943, the County acquired the building and undertook renovation. Today it is the meeting place for the Glencarlyn Citizens Association.
(I-95 and Route 7)

This area was rural and wooded until World War II when the Federal Defense Housing Corporation built the 3,439 unit apartment complex in 1942-43 to help house the large influx of war workers. Because the development lies in both Fairfax and Arlington Counties, it was called Fairlington. (Virginia Landmarks Register and National Register of Historic Places)
