Frequently Asked Questions

My child will start Kindergarten next year. Can I sign her up?

This program is meant to take 3-5 years to complete, so if your child is almost ready for kindergarten, it doesn’t make sense to sign up. But if you’ve been reading to your child all along, he or she has already received the benefit of 1000 Books Before Kindergarten – well done!

Can I count books I read to my child before I registered?

No – the program begins for your family on the day you register, and you only count books you read after registering.

My child likes to read the same book over and over again. How do I count that?

You color in a dot every time you read a book. If you read the same book 10 times, you color in 10 dots.

Can I count books that are read to my child in school, or by my nanny or day care provider?

Yes, any book that is read to your child by anybody counts.

Do the books have to be library books?

No, any book you read counts, whether it’s a library book, your own book, your friend’s book, etc.

My child likes to listen to books on the computer/iPad/eReader/etc. Can I count them?

As long as your child listens to the whole book, it counts.
