UPDATE 9/21/11: Kindle Library Lending is here! More Details
—————————————————————————————-
Did you see the Amazon announcement this week about the “Launch of Library Lending for Kindle Books”?
Complete details aren’t yet available – in their press release, Amazon says “Kindle Library Lending will be available later this year” – but before the end of 2011 we expect you will be able to browse for eBook titles on any desktop or mobile operating system, check out a title with a library card, and then select Kindle as the delivery destination. The Kindle eBook titles borrowed from a library will carry the same rules and policies as all our other eBooks.
We’ll let you know all the details, as soon as we learn more!

Already a fan of our downloadable eBook collection?
- Remember that OverDrive titles can be checked out for 7, 14,or 21 days – your choice. You can change the default – 21 days – at our OverDrive site. Just sign in to your eAccount and choose Lending Periods. (Unfortunately, this isn’t possible from the wireless OverDrive app)
- What’s new with the wireless OverDrive app? Check out the updates for Apple and Android devices, or visit your device’s app store/marketplace.
- Learn about OverDrive’s new BlackBerry app, which supports EPUB eBooks. Not sure if your BlackBerry is supported? See compatible devices at the Device Resource Center.
No Kindle until end of 2011? Rats.
Anonymous,Knowing Amazon, you'll probably be reading Library eBooks on your Kindle sooner rather than later…
I just renewed my library card in anticipation of library lending for Kindle. . .
Any plans for eBooks other than Kindle?
We're keeping our fingers crossed too! Love the Kindle format, which I think is much better than other eReaders, but it's not worth it if you can't rent books from the public library on it. We'll wait a little longer and see if Amazon can allow for library lending before buying.
Margie, we currently have a large collection of eBooks that can read on almost every eReader except the Kindle. You can find more information on our eBooks page.
Any update on when this is going to be made available to the public?
Not yet, but we'll let you know as soon as possible!
http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=help_search_1-3?ie=UTF8&nodeId;=200747550&qid;=1316520857&sr;=1-3The above is a new page on Amazon and message boards are buzzing that some library systems are in beta testing.
We saw the Public Library Books for Kindle FAQ last night too – we'll share more information about how this will work for Arlington Public Library members as soon as possible!
Today's "Kindle Post US" says it's now available to over 11,000 libraries:http://www.kindlepost.com/2011/09/kindle-books-now-available-at-local-libraries.html
FWIW, I just borrowed a book for Kindle. Go to the ePub catalog and one of the options is to get the book for Kindle. Check out the usual way and you'll be re-directed to Amazon for downloading. Way Cool!
