“The Last Akaway”
This year, Kenmore Middle School TAB students chose Arlington author Gary Karton’s first book, “The Last Akaway: A Spirit Animal Adventure” as one of their top ten books of 2013.
Here’s an excellent author interview on the TATAL blog with Karton.
He talks about growing up with a learning disability, and not loving to read until he had kids and started reading to them. He also tell us where he like to write, and what kind of advice he’d give to kids who want to pursue writing as a career.
And Karton drops a few hints about the second book in his series…
What makes “The Last Akaway” a TAB Top 10 Book?
To all those who like to read fantasy books, Gary Karton’s book, The Last Akaway has everything you want. It is filled with humor, amazing creatures and a great story line. Gary Karton is a truly amazing writer and I couldn’t put the book down after I started reading it.
I think the book, The Last Akaway, is a very interesting and fantastic book. Even the title sounds unique. My favorite parts of the book were when the grandmother can’t hear what Brody and Jake are saying so she interprets what she thinks they said and it always comes out funny. For example, when Jake said, “We’ll be right back”, Grammy said, “Who’s Jack and why do you want to bite him?” I also like the whole plot of the book and how kids get powers based on their animals.
The Last Akaway is a fantastic combination of science fiction and fantasy. What I loved the most about The Last Akaway is the journey that Gary Karton takes people on in the story. There are twists throughout the story, like when Jake leaves Brody on the adventure, then comes back.
When Gary Karton came to visit our book club, I asked him where he got the different character names from. He told me that the two main characters, Brody and Jake, were the names of his two kids. Brody’s best friend, Rudy, is the name of his son Brody’s real best friend. Uncle Skeeta is Mr., Karton’s close friend in real life. The book, The Last Akaway, is definitely my favorite book!
The Last Akaway by Gary Karton is a fantasy book about a boy who upon seeing a hunter shoot with an odd gun gains the powers of the Akaway. The Akaway is a highly magical animal that can connect kids to their animal spirit. The boy, Brody Boondoggle, and his friends fight an evil person, Uncle Skeeta tries to stop them from opening a magical portal to Sarraka which is the home of the Akaway and will save it from dying.
I enjoyed this book very much. It is entertaining and humorous, with a great blend of magic and adventure. There were also several very entertaining reoccurring jokes. For example, Brody’s grandmother’s bad hearing kept me laughing as it caused her to misunderstand and interpret things in a very hilarious way. I also found the occasional clashing of Brody and his older brother Jake to be very realistically written. I have a brother of my own and we periodically do the exact same things.
If I were asked to give the book a rating of 10, with 10 being the highest, I would definitely give The Last Akaway a 10!
