Lit Up Programs: Fun Events with Fellow Literary Fans
We’ve met so many cool people at events like The Lit Up Ball, Late Night Recess, Books on Tap and more – but, you don’t have to take our word for it!
Meet Laura, Lit Up fan since October 2014.
What Lit Up Events have you attended?
I went to last years James Bond theme Lit Up Ball.
What is your favorite memory at a Lit Up Program?
Having hosted my own James Bond theme birthday party a month before last year’s ball, I was easily bested by the Lit Up event. It was especially lovely to see the talented dancers enjoying the ballroom at Artisphere!
What is your favorite book?
I tend to read more non-fiction, and the book from that genre that I think about to this day is Perception by Robert Sekuler and Randolph Blake. Fair warning: it’s a textbook I found in a recycle pile at a university, but I read it cover-to-cover. I don’t think I can say that for most of the textbooks I was supposed to read in college! I used to think our visual perception was pretty extraordinary, until I learned the details of hearing, for example. The human ear has evolved to pick up on small vibrations in the air around us; a person can be talking down the street from your apartment, and such a tiny pressure wave can make it through your window into the various structures of the ear, where it is translated into a displacement of the ear drum the width of a hydrogen molecule…eventually registering as a sound in your mind. This book really made me appreciate the amazing sensory world we live in.
