Each year, libraries and bookstores across the country observe Banned Books Week.
This year, Arlington Public Library joined the Virginia Library Association in using Banned Books Week to spotlight your "Freedom to Read," highlighting the important work of protecting your right to read whatever you want, however and whenever. In this spirit, the library encourages readers to examine challenged literary works and promotes free and open access to ideas and information.
Arlington Public library invited the community to create a bookmark design for the theme "Freedom to Read." The inaugural bookmark competition was a big success and the library staff was impressed with the talent and enthusiasm of the program participants. The selection committee chose from hundreds of submissions and had to make difficult choices as all the contributions were wonderful.
The library selected 30 winners, representative of all age categories, showcasing the diversity of the Arlington community.
Congratulations to all the talented artists who participated in the contest. Starting Sept. 21, printed bookmarks of the 30 winning entries will be distributed to the public at all library locations.
