What can the history of media teach us about current events - and the way we learn about them?

One Community, One Book

This month we invite you to read and discuss Brooke Gladstone's "The Trouble with Reality"

Gladstone is NPR's first media reporter, and current host of "On the Media," WNYC’s weekly investigation into how the media shapes our worldview.

You are invited to an an online (Zoom) book discussion on Thursday, June 25, where we will also take questions for Gladstone. Then join us for a Facebook viewing party on Thursday, July, 2, of Library Director Diane Kresh in conversation with Brooke Gladstone.

 

Arlington Reads brings authors and readers together to talk about the important topics of our time.

How to Participate

Read - Borrow "The Trouble with Reality" eBook or buy a copy from your bookstore.

Participate - Take part in the online book discussion, Thursday, June 25.

Ask - Submit questions for Brooke Gladstone in the online book discussions on June 25.

Watch - Join an online watch party for Brooke Gladstone and Diane Kresh's conversation on Thursday, July 2, at 7 p.m.

About the author

Gladstone is the author of "The Trouble With Reality: A Rumination on Moral Panic in Our Time" and "The Influencing Machine," a media manifesto in graphic form, listed among the top books of 2011 by The New Yorker, Publisher’s Weekly, Kirkus Reviews and Library Journal, and among the 10 Masterpieces of Graphic Nonfiction by The Atlantic.

Gladstone was an NPR Moscow-based reporter, senior editor of NPR’s "All Things Considered," and the senior editor of "Weekend Edition with Scott Simon." She is the recipient of two Peabody Awards, a National Press Club Award, an Overseas Press Club Award and many others.

Arlington Reads, a community engagement program of Arlington Public Library, promotes literacy, the joy of reading and intergenerational participation.

“The program brings together people to talk about books and the important topics of our time,” said Library Director Diane Kresh.

Since its inception in 2006, Arlington Reads has featured both national and international fiction and nonfiction authors and cultural icons, such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Wendell Berry, Katherine Boo, Matthew Desmond, Anthony Doerr, Richard Ford, Colum McCann, Tim O’Brien, Ann Patchett, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Elizabeth Strout and Zadie Smith.
