I'm with Lit Up

I’m with Lit Up: James M.

Lit Up Programs: Fun Events with Fellow Literary Fans

We’ve met so many cool people at events like The Lit Up Ball, Late Night Recess, Books on Tap and more – but, you don’t have to take our word for it!

Meet James, Good-Natured Guy and Lit Up Fan

James from Lit UpWhat Lit Up Events have you attended?

I’ve attended the Commuter Book Club, Books on Tap, Strange Lands, and the Strategy Gaming Evenings/Afternoons. I also used to go to Drop Everything and Read.

What is your favorite memory at a Lit Up Program?

I think my favorite memory from a Lit Up event is from about a year ago when we read a romance novel in Books on Tap, and I was the only guy to attend the discussion. The conversation naturally turned to everyone else’s love life, and led to someone concluding “men are stupid.” Everyone else agreed, and I just raised my eyebrows and smiled. Since then, whenever the conversation heads that direction, I get acknowledged as the good-natured guy at the table.

What is your favorite book?

If not that, my favorite memory would be of all the cooperative board games I’ve played that begin as “no worries, we’ll beat this game easily” and end with the group winning with being one mistake away from the world coming to an end.

It’s next to impossible to choose just one book as my favorite, but my favorite that I’ve read lately has to be Red Rising by Pierce Brown. I found it next to impossible to put down, and after finishing the sequel, Golden Son, I actually shouted “No!!” when I discovered the conclusion to the trilogy wouldn’t be out for another two months.

Meet Laura, Lit Up fan since October 2014.

laurad-larger-border_originalWhat Lit Up Events have you attended?

I went to last years James Bond theme Lit Up Ball.

What is your favorite memory at a Lit Up Program?

Having hosted my own James Bond theme birthday party a month before last year’s ball, I was easily bested by the Lit Up event. It was especially lovely to see the talented dancers enjoying the ballroom at Artisphere!

What is your favorite book?

I tend to read more non-fiction, and the book from that genre that I think about to this day is Perception by Robert Sekuler and Randolph Blake. Fair warning: it’s a textbook I found in a recycle pile at a university, but I read it cover-to-cover. I don’t think I can say that for most of the textbooks I was supposed to read in college! I used to think our visual perception was pretty extraordinary, until I learned the details of hearing, for example. The human ear has evolved to pick up on small vibrations in the air around us; a person can be talking down the street from your apartment, and such a tiny pressure wave can make it through your window into the various structures of the ear, where it is translated into a displacement of the ear drum the width of a hydrogen molecule…eventually registering as a sound in your mind. This book really made me appreciate the amazing sensory world we live in.

Meet Kevin C., Lit Up Fan Since 2014

What Lit Up Events have you attended?

My first Lit Up event was Commuter Book Club back in 2014. I found out about it via Twitter and I’ve been coming back ever since. I’ve also attended multiple Shut Up and Write sessions, Drop Everything and Read!, Harry Potter & Star Wars Trivia, the 2nd annual Lit Up Ball, and I participated in Summer Reading for adults.

What is your favorite memory at a Lit Up Program?

There are so many good memories from all the different events, I don’t know if it’s fair to pick one. Commuter Book club was my first ever Lit Up event so it holds a special place in my memories. I love our discussions and I’ve grown fond of all of the people I’ve met. I guess if I had to pick a favorite memory, it would be last year’s Lit Up Ball. I went with a big group of friends. We all went to the thrift store together to pick out costumes and we just had a good, fun, silly time at the ball.

What is your favorite book?

My favorite “book” of all time would have to be the collective Harry Potter series. Harry Potter was what got me interested in reading. Harry Potter excluded, my favorite book is “The Secret Life of Bees” by Sue Monk Kidd. My favorite Commuter Book Club book is “The Cuckoo’s Calling” by Robert Galbraith.
