Voices of Little Saigon in Clarendon: Public Art on View at Central Library

Post Published: May 4, 2015

Public Art and Oral Histories Honor Clarendon’s Vietnamese Heritage

Clarendon Neighborhood History ad

On May 9, 2015, artist Khánh H. Lê’s temporary public installation will be on display in the fountain of Clarendon Central Park for “Echoes of Saigon,” a multimedia celebration honoring the journey of Clarendon’s Vietnamese community during the late 1970’s and 1980’s.

In addition to the public art installation, Echoes of Saigon will include hands on art activities, music, a walking tour led by former community members, a County Board proclamation, special guest speakers, other displays, and the Lemongrass Food Truck.

Following the May 9 event, the artwork will move to the Center for Local History at Central Library.

About the Artist and Installation

This artwork draws on primary sources to highlight the history of Little Saigon – the thriving hub of Vietnamese commerce and social activity that existed in Clarendon in the late 1970s and ‘80s. Similar to his work for the mobile gallery Art on the ART Bus, Lê has created a mixed media townscape, embedded with memories of an ethnic enclave that no longer exists.

Lê has reproduced photographs by Michael Horsley, who documented Little Saigon during its heyday, to create structures that resemble individual businesses that existed. The buildings further tell the stories of Little Saigon through the inclusion of audio components that play excerpts of recent oral history interviews with former Little Saigon community members. The interviews were conducted by graduate students from Urban Affairs & Planning in Virginia Tech’s School of Public & International Affairs.

Commissioned by Arlington Public Art, the installation also includes a sculptural apricot blossom tree and folded paper boats that come together to form flowers, symbolizing the journeys of Vietnamese immigrants who left their homeland to create a new community in Clarendon and a new life in America.

About “Echoes of Little Saigon”

In the fall of 2014, Arlington County’s Historic Preservation Program and the Center for Local History collaborated with graduate students from Virginia Tech’s Department of Urban Affairs & Planning to explore ways to document, preserve, and celebrate the cultural heritage and diversity of Arlington. One of the resulting projects focused on the enclave in Clarendon once known as Little Saigon. The students conducted oral histories with members of the Vietnamese community who immigrated to Arlington during the 1970s and ‘80s, and those who shopped at or owned the many Vietnamese restaurants and businesses that existed in Clarendon during that time. The students also provided recommendations for increasing awareness about Little Saigon and recognizing the contributions of the Vietnamese community to Arlington.

Inspired by the students’ work, County staff and volunteers have continued to collaborate with community members, Virginia Tech professor Dr. Elizabeth Morton, and her students Judd Ullom and Carlin Tacey to organize today’s event honoring Clarendon’s Vietnamese heritage and to launch a Little Saigon Smartphone tour created by Judd Ullom.

County staff, local artists, students, and members of the region’s Vietnamese American community are continuing to explore other ways to commemorate and raise awareness about the contributions of Little Saigon to Arlington’s cultural heritage. Future goals include creating a permanent historic marker to honor this history.

Snapshots

On exhibit at Central Library, May 2015

CinCin Fang

CinCin Fang is a traditional artist based in Arlington, Virginia, working in watercolor, ink, acrylic, and drawing.

Her work focuses on mood and dynamic composition rather than photorealism. Snapshots is an exhibition of paintings. The first floor watercolors are embellished figure studies, where a story is added to the figure study to make a complete piece. The acrylic paintings on the second floor are more imagined, and try to invoke a mood rather than a storyline.

Please join us for a reception honoring the artist and his work on April 11, from 1:00 – 3:00. Speck will give a talk on pinhole photography at 2:00 p.m.

About Scott Speck

Though I am a scientist and engineer by profession, my art is where I express myself most freely. I am a self-taught artist and writer with no formal art training. My photography concentrates on film-based pinhole (lensless) photography, most notably of landscapes, architecture, and portraits. I also do lensed photography with large format film cameras and digital single lens reflex cameras.

Recently, I have concentrated mostly on pinhole landscape photography, creating images that have a dreamlike, atmospheric quality. My best works in this genre are featured in this exhibition.

I have been published in print-based books, electronic books, magazines, and blogs, and I have been interviewed for my photography. I show my work at exhibitions, and my art has been purchased by enthusiasts and collectors.

I live and work in the Baltimore/DC area, and I am available for commissioned art photography, as well as to give presentations on pinhole photography to groups and clubs.

Professionally, I have worked with the Hubble Space Telescope project, the James Webb Space Telescope Project, and as a modeling/simulation engineer and analyst at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

Art and Story

The power of art and story is universal. A good story or other form of literature can spark the imagination and inspire artists to create meaningful work. Behind every piece of art is a story–whether borne of the artists’ experiences or their interpretation of social or cultural events. The works in this show demonstrate a wide assortment of media types and draw from a variety of subject matter, while each piece depicts a story in some way.

The artwork displayed in the Library in April was created by members of the Del Ray Artisans, a nonprofit arts organization based in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria. this fund-raising exhibit is part of Del Ray Artisans’ Gallery Without Walls program in partnership with the Library.

Artist statement:

During the warmer months, I enjoy observing plants on our patio as they grow and develop. I especially enjoy photographing them and creating small, serene landscapes, or patioscapes. Each patioscape includes one of my favorite sightings of plant life, which I tend to find by seeking out a plant’s inherently organic and artful arrangement. I look for something vibrant, yet peaceful, and relatively sparse.

Close-ups allow me to showcase striking plant attributes, such as color, texture, and shape. Because of these attributes, a plant may appear to be the center of attention in a photograph. However, the interplay of the subject with its background – for example, a flower leaning on a fence or a fern’s position in a stone wall – is crucial to the overall effect, and underscores how subject and background complement one another and often are equally important.

Nets: The Interaction between Line and Color

On exhibit at the Westover Branch Library, March 3 – May 4 2015

no glare

Please join us for a reception honoring the artist and his work on Saturday, March 28 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Fernando Osorio Zumarán plays with line and color in this intriguing series. He uses two types of lines: one drawn by hand and the other by instrument. The lines spin nets over colors; the colors spread over the space. The nets represent the rational restrictions that our minds dictate over our emotions, which are represented by the panes of color. It is a dialectic interaction between thought and emotion, mind and heart, line and color. The artist says this particular set of paintings are especially meaningful to him because they mark a turning point in the curve of his life – the point he returned to painting.

2015 Scholastic Art Show

Photography, Painting and Sculpture by Arlington Students

On exhibit at the Central Library, March 2015

Scholastic Art 2015

Each winter, the Library hosts the Regional Scholastic Art Award, a competition which encompasses all Middle School and High School students in Arlington County.

Almost 2000 works of art were submitted and judged by three jurors. Out of these, the judges awarded either a Gold or a Silver Certificate to approximately 300 pieces.. These works are on display on the first and second floors of the Arlington Central Library. In addition, our Youth Services staff will chose one piece to add to our own permanent collection.

In 1923, M.R. Robinson founded this prestigious art exhibition for students with artistic talent. Each year, Regional Art Competitions across the nation select over 12,000 Gold Keys out of 100,000 submissions. These 12,000 Gold Key individual and portfolio works of art are then juried on a National Level in New York City. On a National Level, over 1,000 works of art are awarded as Gold and Silver Keys. In the past seven years, Arlington County alone has received between 7-11 National awards for both individual and portfolios works of art.

Artist Statement:

I’ve had an interest in photography from an early age. After studying film photography in high school for two years, the advances in digital photography in the last decade have made my pursuit of taking, publishing and sharing photographs much more accessible. Over the past 10 years, photography has become my main hobby, and I hope to continue to improve and progress as a photographer. At the beginning of the digital photography age, I took part in an on-line photography challenge (Photo-A-Week) which involved taking and posting at least one photo each week for critique and comments, for two years. Participating in the project and the exposure to works of other photographers helped me improve my technical ability, composition and creativity. I continue to study the art of photography at seminars, lectures and classes and hope to someday turn this passion into a second career.

My interest in photography, travel and architecture has allowed me to capture numerous images from this area and around the world, some of which are part of this exhibit.
