2012 Scholastic Art Show

Published: March 6, 2012

Each winter, the Central Library hosts the Regional Scholastic Art Award, a competition which encompasses all Middle School and High School students in Arlington County.

Almost 2000 works of art were submitted and judged by three jurors. Out of these, the judges chose 376 to be awarded either a Gold or a Silver Certificate. These works are on display on the first and second floors of the Arlington Central Library. In addition, our Youth Services staff will chose one piece to add to our own permanent collection.

Washington-Lee High School will host the awards ceremony on Wednesday, March 7 at 6:30 p.m., co-sponsored by the Arlington Public Schools, the Library and the Arlington Artists Alliance.

The official event opening will take place at Central Library directly after the awards ceremony.

In 1923, M.R. Robinson founded this prestigious art exhibition for students with artistic talent. Each year, Regional Art Competitions across the nation select over 12,000 Gold Keys out of 100,000 submissions. These 12,000 Gold Key individual and portfolio works of art are then juried on a National Level in New York City. On a National Level, over 1,000 works of art are awarded as Gold and Silver Keys. In the past seven years, Arlington County alone has received between 7-11 National awards for both individual and portfolios works of art.

The exhibit will be up at the Central Library through the end of March.

The sculpture was fabricated of bronze (plate, perforated plate, and rod). The finish is dark tortoise shell patina. All of the work was completed at Ms. Fedon’s studio in Pennsylvania and then transported to Arlington. The sections are anchored into the brick walls.

The artist, Lisa Fedon of Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania, was chosen through a competitive process by a jury of community representatives, local artists, and staff from the Library and the Public Art section of the Arlington County Cultural Affairs Division.

In her design, Ms. Fedon combined images taken by local high school photography students with her own photographic record of “life in Arlington.” The sculpture is funded by monies raised raised in the Campaign for Excellence, by the Friends of the Arlington Public Library, and by other contributions.

Paintings by Julie Hart at Central

Published: January 10, 2012

Julie Hart

Paintings on display at the Central Library during the month of January, 2012.

“I paint colorful, representational, oil paintings that capture a moment in mood, light, or composition. My subjects center around landscapes and other discovered items. Wherever I go I am open to possible subject matter for a painting. Oftentimes, this is close to home, in my suburban neighborhood.

I take photos and make mental notes about what I want to paint later. An idea usually starts with something that captures my eye like the interaction of angles and lines or an interesting texture or light quality. I’m not always captured by a beautiful scene, but by bits of that scene: reflections in the water, an interesting window, or an arrangement of rocks.

I usually compose images in my sketchbook after cropping images on the computer. After I decide what size suits the image I want to paint, I make my own custom-sized, wood panels to get the exact proportions I want. I like to apply a base color before painting. I choose this color based on what the painting is and what colors I want peeking through the top layers. Then I apply impasto paint in slightly exaggerated colors.

I like texture in my work and use a palette knife and brush, along with a scraper. The scraper allows me to draw into or remove some of the top layers of paint and expose the under-painting, incorporating sgraffito. My subjects focus on landscapes and still lifes.

I also started painting homeless animal portraits in correlation to my volunteering for an animal rescue group. Within this range of subjects, the same things attract me to an image. Usually the most important is great light, which I inherited from my background in photography. Another important element for me is good composition. The other element I concentrate on is conveying a mood or a personality.”
