Frequently Asked Questions
What are the dates for Summer Reading?
Monday, June 1- Tuesday, Sept. 1.
Who can sign up?
Everyone! Readers of any age, including readers-in-training and those read to by a family member, can participate.
When are the opening and closing celebrations?
For safety reasons, there will not be a kickoff event in person this year. Please check the Library calendar and the biweekly newsletters for virtual events.
How do I track my reading?
Track the number of days you read on Beanstack. You can use the Beanstack website, or the Beanstack App; this year we're not using the Library App. If you need a paper reading log, you can download and print it out.
How do I complete Summer Reading?
Read for at least 30 days between June 1 and September 1, and mark the days in Beanstack. You can also record the books you read in Beanstack, but the number of books you read doesn't count towards completing Summer Reading.
The last day to begin reading and still have enough time to complete the program is August 3.
How much do I have to read per day to complete Summer Reading?
There’s no limit – read a lot or a little, books, newspapers, magazines, listen to audiobooks - it all counts! As long as you’ve read once each day, you can mark it on your tracker.
How do I earn prizes?

If I use a paper reading log, how do I report that I have finished Summer Reading?

- Phone - 703-228-5990 (Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.).
- We will need your name, age, and a phone number or email address to contact you if you win.
What are the age groups for Summer Reading?
There are 4 age groups for readers: Preschool (Ages 0-6), Elementary (Rising Grades K-5), Teen (Rising Grades 6-12), and Adult (Ages 18+).
Why do age groups matter?
In Beanstack, readers are organized by age group. Prizes for the Beanstack Reader Raffle and the Grand Prize will both be drawn according to age group. Participants will also receive biweekly newsletters based on their age group.
When is the last day to pick up my prizes?
For safety reasons, we are unable to offer physical prizes this year. There will be plenty of chances to win virtual prizes throughout the summer and at the conclusion of Summer Reading. These winners will be contacted individually. Learn more on our Prizes page.
Why participate in Summer Reading?
Studies show that students who do not read over summer vacation can slip in reading ability by the time the return to school in the fall, so Library summer reading programs are designed as a fun way to keep students reading over the summer. Over the years, Arlington's Summer Reading Challenge has grown from a program for children to a summer literacy celebration for all ages.
