Spring Shoes for "The Art of Food"

Published: April 3, 2010

Did you notice the fantastic floral shoes on display in the first floor lobby vitrines at Central Library? These are the creations of the Rock Spring Garden Club, submitted for our current show, “The Art of Food.”

The inspiration for the fancy footwear came about after a member of the Rock Spring Garden Club attended the Philadelphia International Flower Show last year and saw shoes and handbags decorated with dried plant material – apparently a bona fide flower show category in the “Artistic Crafts” division.

So starting last autumn, members began to collect their own dried plant material – with the expectation of entering their decorated shoes into the Library’s Recycled Art Show (held for the last 3 years in April). Luckily, when “The Art of Food” show was announced instead (inspired by this year’s Arlington Reads theme of food sustainability), the club quickly realized that much of the dried plant material on the shoes was both recycled and food!

The Art of Food exhibit continues on the Central Library’s second floor, and will be on display until April 30.

The Rock Spring Garden Club is devoted to floral design, horticulture, conservation and the environment. They meet once a month and welcomes new members – for more information contact President Sallie McHugh at samchugh@aol.com.
