Frequently Asked Questions: Volunteering

How do I apply to volunteer?

Expand

For most roles, you will need to complete a library volunteer application.

I want to volunteer but I don’t see an advertised role that interests me. Can’t I just volunteer to help with general activities?

Expand

We sincerely appreciate your willingness to help. However, due to the time it takes to manage volunteers, we must define specific roles for their work.

If you don’t see a role that interests you, please check back regularly. You can also let staff at your preferred location know of your interest.

I’ve submitted an application for a particular role. Now what?

Expand

You can check the status of your application via your volunteer account.

If accepted, the onboarding process for new volunteers generally takes two to three weeks to complete.

I have a court-ordered community service requirement. Can I volunteer at the library?

Expand

We do not discriminate against those needing court-ordered community service. However, most of our opportunities involve shifts of two to three hours per week, so completing your required service may take some time.

We suggest you review additional opportunities listed through VolunteerArlington.

My child needs to complete community service hours. How can I help them?

Expand

Please encourage your child to complete a teen library volunteer application independently.

I don’t have a professional reference.

Expand

Consider asking a friend, neighbor, teacher or past volunteer supervisor to serve as your reference.

Please try to avoid listing a family member.

I’d like to share my expertise by volunteering to lead a one-time or ongoing program.

Expand

Great! Please complete a Propose a Program or Partnership form.

Please note that even with the contributions of volunteers, we still need to dedicate staff time to supporting new programs. The program should address a community need and support the library’s mission. For those reasons, we cannot guarantee your proposal will be accepted.

Do I really need to log my hours?

Expand

Yes, please! The data we collect is an important part of storytelling and demonstrating how much time and energy the library staff and volunteers invest to support the community.

I have another question about volunteering.

Expand
