Would you like to learn how to download eBooks from the Library? If your holidays include unwrapping a brand-new eReader, take note: We’ve got the eReader Clinic for you!
Bring your new electronic companion to Central Library Auditorium on Thursday, Jan. 6 at 7:00 p.m. for a how-to with the Library’s tech gurus on using our free downloadable eBooks.
Remember, the Amazon Kindle and some other eReaders do not accept Library downloads (so we won’t be able to help you with those). Read the most up-to-date list of compatible eReaders and system requirements or print out an eReader Cheat Sheet (pdf).
The eReader Clinic will cover:
- Overview of library’s eBook collection
- How to checkout and download an eBook
- Which eBooks we buy, how we decide, what other area libraries offer
- Answers to FAQs (technical and about eBooks / eReaders in general)
There will be a Q&A; period, and take-home handouts will be provided.
Can’t attend on Jan. 6, but need to ask questions? Checkout our troubleshooting page and our Help! Email Library Staff page.

When will the kindle be supported
Ginger says
How about a workshop that informs us on WHAT ereaders the library supports and what the various ?

Hey Ginger,We will be discussing which eReaders can use Overdrive at tonight's clinic, so you should definitely come if you want to hear (and see) that info in person. In the meantime, you'll also find a link to the information in the post above – see Read the most up-to-date list of compatible eReaders and system requirements in the third paragraph. To make the info easy to find, we try to include a link to the compatible devices list each time we blog about eBooks and eAudio – and you can always find it on our eBook and eAudiobook portals.
The Librarians says
Anonymous, when the Kindle works with Overdrive, we will be the first to let you know! Unfortunately, that doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon. Amazon currently uses a different file type for its eBooks, and a proprietary DRM (Digital Rights Management) system on the Kindle, neither of which are compatible with Overdrive eBooks. For a more detailed technical explanation, check out this blog post by Jason Griffey.

The link to OverDrive's list of compatible eReaders and system requirements and cheatsheet leave out the Mobipocket ebook collection (which appears to be compatible with Blackberries and some other phones).
The Librarians says
The Mobipocket eBooks aren't on this cheat sheet because they're not readable on any of the more common dedicated eReaders. You can find a link to the list of devices that work with Mobipocket on our eBook portal, or here.
