Yosemite and Beyond
On Exhibit at Cherrydale Branch Library, July 8 – Oct. 6, 2014
Robin Kent, best known for his dramatic images of the Washington, D.C., area, has been a photographer since leaving a career in the Federal Government in 2000.
His images of the city are often captured at first light, when most people are still asleep or just beginning their commute to work. “The morning twilight is my favorite time. The light can be incredible, and frequently I have these places all to myself.”
An active artist in his community, Robin was one of the founding members of Great Falls Studios, a consortium now comprising more than 100 artists. A member of the organization’s board of directors, he has participated in the creation of a unique business model that has been highlighted in regional and national publications.
Robin has honed his photographic skills by taking courses in fine art photography at such institutions as the International Center for Photography in New York City and the Palm Beach Photographic Centre in Florida.
Most importantly, he has attended workshops in landscape photography from the late Galen Rowell, founder of Mountain Light Photography, and in advanced printing from Mac Holbert, co-founder of Nash Editions.
“Galen Rowell introduced me to the ‘magic hour,’ which occurs around dawn or dusk. This is the time when the sun is close to edge of the earth’s horizon. The magic comes from the warm light of day mingling with the cool darkness of night. And the best part is that no magic hour is like another.”
Robin is also an active photographer of the natural landscape. This exhibit at the Cherrydale Branch Library is the first public showing of a 15-year retrospective of his work on western landscapes.
