Ah, Labor Day weekend!

It means we are in late summer and have only a few weeks left before the autumnal equinox.  While I have been busy planting fall crops, I began to think it would be nice to take a tour of three of the gardens I wrote about at the beginning of the season.

These are Central Library, Ball-Sellers, and the American Legion Post on Washington Boulevard.

 

 

Central Library, of course, I have written about with some regularity this summer.

When I visited Saturday, the finches were feasting on the sunflowers by the tennis courts—loudly.  In fact it was their volume that made me notice them, and that’s saying something, given how bright they are.

Not only are they bright and loud, but they’re acrobats!

 

 

 

 

The Library garden is looking good for this time of year.

See that purple?

The squash and cucumbers have peaked and are looking a little “end of summer,” but the peppers and eggplants are coming into their own.

The Malabar spinach we planted a few weeks ago in the square foot garden has come up and looks sturdy.

There’s summer left in this garden, and no doubt a few fall crops in the offing.

Central Donations On Hold Until After Fall Book Sale

In order to prepare for the Fall Friends of the Library Book Sale Sept. 27 – 30, we will not be accepting donations at the Central Library from Saturday, Sept. 15 – Friday, Oct. 5.

This gives the Book Sale Processing Team (the hard-working volunteers who sort and organize donations daily) time to  prepare for and run the big Fall Sale.

 

Want to donate to the Library?
Our other Library locations will continue accept donations during this time. And on Saturday, Oct. 6, Central will gladly start taking those used books, CDs and DVD off your hands again.

Food, Films and Traditional Fashion

On Saturday, August 25 the Korean Spirit and Cultural Promotion Program presented a lively afternoon of activities and information for Columbia Pike Branch Library patrons:

The group presented a reenactment of the Traditional Korean Wedding Ceremony, and showed two short documentaries – “The Hidden Treasure of Korean Art,” which focuses on Korean art and antiquities, and “Korea Today,” which highlights contemporary Korean industry and technological advances.

The afternoon ended with a traditional Korean meal, served by the presenters clad in traditional Korean costumes.

62 people attended, including young John Elijah Lee (pictured above), who came in a traditional Korean costume of his own.
