The Shop: Maker Policies

Participation in Open Lab requires an active Library card, and a completed Maker User Agreement.

Most Shop tools are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Maker Expectations

  • Check in with Shop staff upon arrival.
  • Demonstrate safe and proper tool use for equipment. Manuals are available upon request.
  • Pay posted fees for any Shop-provided materials used.
  • No food or uncovered drinks in The Shop.
  • Projects may not be stored in The Shop.
  • Workstations should be cleaned after use.

Makers Under 18

  • Open Hours are available to Makers ages 9 and up.
  • Makers under 18 must have a Maker User Agreement signed by a parent or guardian.
  • Makers ages 9–13 must always remain with a parent or caregiver.

Safety

  • Wear appropriate clothing; closed-toe shoes are required in the Little Shop.
  • Use safety equipment (goggles, masks, gloves) where required.
  • Report any accidents or incidents to staff immediately.
  • Stop using any tool or equipment that appears unsafe and notify staff.
  • Creating dangerous items or weapons is prohibited.
  • Behavior deemed unsafe is not permitted; Shop staff determine what constitutes “unsafe behavior.”
  • Arlington County Public Library is not responsible for defects inherent in tools or equipment.

Shop Tool Use

  • Tools may not be removed from The Shop.
  • 3D printers are operated by staff only. Submit print requests here.
  • Use of the Glowforge laser cutter and glass kiln is limited to certified Makers age 18 and older.
  • Shop equipment is intended for educational and hobby use.
  • Return tools and equipment in the same condition they were issued, aside from normal wear.
  • Loss or damage of Shop tools or equipment may result in suspension of Shop access at the library’s sole discretion.

Technology and equipment in The Shop are made possible in part by the Friends of the Arlington Public Library.
