Summer Reading, Winter Help for Literacy
This morning Library staff presented the The Reading Connection’s communications director, Judy Hijikata (left), and Lindsey Berke, a Reading Connection board member and children’s author, with a check for more than $2400.
The check represents a $1 donation from the Friends of the Arlington Public Library for each person who completed 2015 Summer Reading.
The Reading Connection is dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk children and families by helping them create and sustain literacy-rich environments and motivation for reading.
The mission is accomplished by:
- Volunteers who read aloud to children at shelters and community centers
- Donations that provide children with free, new books to keep
- Workshops that help parents encourage reading and literacy development
- Training for family support workers who promote the importance of reading
In 2015, for the first time, Summer Reading at the Library included programming for adults as well as children.
