Library, Cooling Center, Spray Park

Published: July 1, 2012

Both Central Library and the Shirlington Branch Library will stay open tonight (Sunday) until 11:00 p.m.

During this weekend’s power outage / heat wave, Arlingtonians have flocked to the Library:

By 2:30 p.m. Sunday, over 600 people were perched on practically every available service at the Central Library. They were reading and studying, charging cell phones and computers, using the WiFi and checking in with distant loved ones. Even the Virginia Room and the Auditorium were drafted into service.

The Arlington County Fire Department helped out by creating a temporary spray park in Quincy Park for both kids and their adults:

What ever you do this week, try to stay cool, drink lots of water and be safe.

Central Library & its staff are always terrific – my family wants to thank you for this great way to respond to your neighbors’ needs!

Thanks for keeping Central Library open long hours this weekend. PLEASE open on July 4th as many offices will be closed, thus more people at home in need of cooling. Thanks!

I echo th request to stay open on Juky 4, or have some hours. If we still don’t have power it is such a wonderful resource and extremely appreciated.

What an extraordinary response from the library system. I’ve not seen this type of response during my years in the Arlington community (1961 to now). I am more than impressed that the library has such a view to support the community in this way. The word “thanks” seems so inadequate.

Although we hope everyone’s power will be restored by then, we’re happy to report that Central Library will be open Wednesday from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Thank you to the library staff and volunteers who worked long hours and even holidays to keep our community cool! I could hardly believe Central was able to open on the 4th of July, but I know it was greatly appreciated by all without power.

It has been a nice surprise to see how the Library Staff have handled this emergency situation. I was very impressed with the sprinkler trucks from the Arl. Co. Fire Dept. too.

This is what being a neighbor is all about!

Thank You Central Library Staff (each and every one of you) & also a big Thanks to the Arlington County Fire Dept.
