Banned Books Week 2024: Protecting the Freedom to Read
Each year, libraries and bookstores across the country observe Banned Books Week. This year, Arlington Public Library joins the Virginia Library Association in using this week to spotlight your Freedom to Read, highlighting the important work of protecting your right to read whatever you want, however and whenever. In this spirit, the Library encourages readers to examine challenged literary works, and promotes free and open access to ideas and information.
This year, we invite you to create a bookmark design uplifting the Freedom to Read. Submit your entry between July 22 and Aug. 18 using a physical entry form at your library or online, or submit a digital entry through our online form. Winning entries will be professionally printed and distributed at all library locations during Banned Books week.

Your Official Book Sanctuary
On September 26, 2023, Arlington County and Arlington Public Library became an official Book Sanctuary.
The Arlington County Board adopted a Resolution in support of Arlington Public Library declaring, “Arlington County libraries as Book Sanctuaries, committed to protecting banned and challenged books and the right of the residents of Arlington to read the books they choose without fear of suppression.”
